Google Desktop - Features

Basically "Google Desktop" looks like another Spotlight. So what's the point of using this in the first place? Did anyone try it already?

Well, it indexes Gmail, which is handy for people who use that. And I guess if you liked the integration with google.com it'd be handy.

I don't really see the point since we have spotlight and gmail can be downloaded via pop3.

I think there are two features that are note worthy. One is obvious, it indexes your gmail and google files which spotlight doesn't. The other is really weird. Google Desktop creates a cache of your deleted files, too. At first glance, it looks like it can recover trashed files. Of course I think that means that Google can scan that cache and index it for its use...

BINGO! I value my privacy. That's why I won't use it.

You can tell it not to do that if you so wish...

I don't know that Google is actually scanning that cache file. In fact it may all be paranoia! I do know is that when I start writing an email in my gmail account I can watch the ad links pop up directly related to what I am writing. Google "gives" away that two gigs of space for a price! And the Google Desktop may have the same "feature". I need to make a new tin foil hat...

Personally, I'm starting to fear Google as much as I fear Microsoft. While they haven't yet amassed all the power Microsoft has, they're definitely working on it. As a Mac user, I don't feel Microsoft can invade my privacy too much. But the whole idea of search engines keeping your search records for any length of time for any reason is really terrifying.

If you install this app on your desktop, they'll be able to beam from UNDERNEATH your tinfoil hat! Very dangerous!

It was developed for Windows, to replicate Spotlight.

Even if it's a safe program nobody really knows what Google is doing behind the scenes while you are connected to the internet. Google already monitors our searches. The best thing is not to use this program. Spotlight is awesome and overall makes Google Desktop sorta redundant. Why install an extra piece of software which does very little above what Tiger already does.

Search Gmail accounts
Search mail accounts for clients other than Mail.app (notably Thunderbird)
Search web browser histories for clients other than Safari (notably Firefox)
And I think it's faster on some machines

It is basically the same thing as Spotlight, just with a slightly different feature set.
