I have a 500 gig library of music (don't ask) and have kind of a quirky setup to make it available on my home network. It works ok, but the problem is that the size of the library seems to freak out iTunes. It takes foverer to load, freezes temporarily sometimes, permanently sometimes, works really slugishly others. Anyone else dealing with a huge itunes library/have any solutions for this?

Thanks!

Mine is 235 gigs, and I see none of those problems.

That's good to hear. What mac/processor speed etc do you have? And how are you connected to the library? Wired? Wireless?

Library sits on a firewire drive connected to a Mac mini G4 1.25 Ghz/1GB RAM.

Via built in 54Mbps Airport.

Accessed from MacBook C2Duo 2GHz. No problems either when accessing from a 1.5GHz G4 Powerbook, either.

Only things I notice is delays when editing ID3 tags from the MacBook, as in some cases the whole song is apparently rewritten with the new tag/cover, and of course when the external drive has spun down - if I select an album, I have to wait for the remote drive to spin up before the album tags are shown.

Note that I keep my actual iTunes folder on the MacBook drive; I just add music to the Mac mini only and drag that into iTunes on the MacBook from the Finder. Pain in the ass if you add lots of stuff all the time.

Okay I bought a new 'n' airport and have all my expresses (except one, but it'll come around ) showing up and able to play music. Now I'm wondering, how do I create the library on my powerbook? Do I drag all the files (500 gigs worth) from the airdrive, over the airport network to the itunes on my mac and let it churn all night? Should I connect the mac directly to the drive and build the itunes library on my mac that way? does it make a difference?
