TiVo Decode Manager - Video Looks Like Crap

I use TiVo Decode Manager to pull video from my family room onto my two Macs. When played back on my Macs, either through Quicktime Pro or iTunes, the video looks grainy and has white artifacts dancing at the very top edge.

This is standard-definition content that looks just fine on my 42" plasma.

How can video that's good enough for a 42" screen look awful on a 13" screen?
