QT pro- anyway to crop black bars?

I have a muxed mpeg2 video that I pulled off my replay tv and I would like to crop the black bars out - is there any way to do this qt or perhaps someone could suggest another program?

Yes, it's possible. You need to create a picture in Photoshop or similar program with the exact dimensions as the original movie and a black rectangle on white background for what you want to keep visible in the crop. Save that as PICT-file. In QuickTime Pro open the movie properties (⌘J) and in the visual properties of the video track under "mask" choose that picture file for the mask.

Actually this is quite easy using a mask. It's nicely detailed here. There are even some sample masks to help you along.

Thanks for chiming in - I did do what you had suggested and and it did work. Easier than it sounds. The result is that the video looks cropped - but in reality the bars are masked so the reduction in file size did not happen.

You are talking about masking, not cropping. He wants to crop the bars OUT. The other problem is that QuickTime is not able to edit/save muxed MPEG2 files. ffmpeg should do the job.
