I have some DVDs that I want to back up. I have recently baught an external 500GB hard drive. I want to be able to rip the DVD and then convert the file to MPEG4 or H.264. How would I go about doing that so then I can save them to my external HD. I am kind of new to macs.

Look for an application called "Handbrake." I think it's at handbrake.m0k.org.

Let me be one to inform you that while it is legal to back up your DVDs, it's not legal to break the encryption on them, as this is a violation of the DMCA. ;-)

Only in the US, and, though I am not a lawyer, the DMCA only covers 'non-trivial' copy protection. This is not court tested, but you one could certainly make the case that current DVD protection is 'trivial' in the context of handbrake and Mac the Ripper.
Look up Mac the Ripper too.

Yup thats all your going to need handbrake (now called mediafork) and Mac the ripper. I have backed up my dvds too- using this method. Works nicely and you dont have to worry about scratching one.

is there a solution yet to back up one's dvds while maintaining video and audio quality at the orignal sources quality? it always seems that they are no where near as good, especially the audio. can you keep dts or dd audio on movies? generally, i just do my surf and snowboard movies since they are pretty much only playing stereo music and no surround sound.

In this case all you need is a program like toast (or Apple internal software based burning utility) to make a copy of the DVD. it should be an exact copy. Movie studios impose a copy protection layer on their DVD's to prevent copies from being made (despite fair use laws); but homemade movies do not have this layer of protection on them.
