OK. So I need to send my Powerbook in for repair. It's going to take about a week. Most of my files are Word / Excell - anything else I can cope without for a week.
But. My email. It's all in mail.app.
I'm going to be using an old Win 2k machine for the week - so what should I do - I'm putting all my files on an external USB drive, so I'll be able to access them, but how should I set up my email? Is there any way to export from mail so that I can read them in Thunderbird or something?
Thanks!

Back up everything before you send it in. You never know if they might just send you a replacement machine - which has none of your files on it.

Yep - I've got everything backed up on a huge external drive - my question is can I access these files (esp email, word and excell I have sorted) from my win 2k machine while the Mac is gone?

you will need a windows-readable partition to put the things you want to access on.

Thanks! I have that - my backup drive is FAT32 - I can read all my files, my question is about email from mail.app - is there any windows email client that can read my mail? Can I export it to a standard format or something?

If your mail is stored on an IMAP server, any IMAP client will read your mail. If you've downloaded your mail via POP, if you have an IMAP account you might find it easiest to transfer your mail back up to the server.
Otherwise, your best bet would be to research exporting from Mail and importing into Thunderbird. Since OS X Mail no longer operates via mbox, I'm not sure what export options are available since I don't use Mail myself.

BTW, it's "lose". Loose = the opposite of tight.
