I have an old aol itunes account and a new apple itunes account, is there a way to join the two so they can be used as one?

I don't think you can merge them. But the AOL songs will play forever provide the machine remains authorized. The Mac can be authorized for many accounts at the same time. All this means for you is that when you purchase a new Mac someday, you'll need to authorize both the AOL account and the iTunes account.
