Hello everybody,
I created this topic to discuss the possibilities to speed up Mac OS X in general.
I am running X on only a G4 867 with 1GB Memory, and with this configuration the system can get sloppy at times. After a while I got fed up with the slowness of my system so I decided to reinstall and install only eat up a little amount of HD space as well as memory. So here are the applications I installed until now and my ratings for everyday usage and snappiness.
Web Browser: Shira, a little downgrade from Safari but still a very good browser and much easier on ressources then Safari.
Word Processing: AbiWord, I fell in love with this app right away, much faster then MS and I think even aesthetically more appealling.
CD/DVD Burning: Disco, I like this one a lot also much faster then Toast and I find it ready for everyday use already.
E-Mail: Apple Mail, I don't know any alternatives.

I would like to know what you guys are using or any other measures you have to keep your system up to speed.

Well if you want to discuss Mac OSX why did you not post it in the Mac OSX forum?

It looks like he wants to discuss lighter weight apps for OS X, rather than making the OS lighter weight.

You know you can burn DVDs right from the Finder or Disc Utility, right?

Sorry I misunderstood. I thought you wanted to make OSX lighter weight, especially since your thread title references OSX and not apps.
