anyone know of a free program to copy retail dvds. i would like to back up my collection. i used to use dvdfab decrypter on my windoze box and absolutely loved it. im having trouble finding such a program for my mac. ive checked into mactheripper but to my knowledge its only supported on ppc chips and not to mention quite out of date as i doubt it will copy the newest protection schemes. thanks in advance for any help.

If you are in the USA, you should not copy retail DVDs. However, if you are not in the USA, or if you want to copy non-copyrighted DVDs, you could use Mac the Ripper or Handbrake.

It is still in active development, but you have to donate (however much or as little as you like) to gain access to the newer betas. Details in the MacTheRipper forums at Ripdifferent.com.

Yes. Many of Sony's new dvds don't even work in normal dvd players.

And those titles definitely should not be bought.

Yep. Trouble is, because Sony is allowed to use the DVD symbol even when it's disks don't meet the specs, you can't tell whether they are defective by design.

No, but they need to be returned as defective.
