It seems that more and more, applications want my root password, and want to use an installer to put crap everywhere on my machine instead of drag-and-drop installing. Well, I'm drawing a line in the sand. I hate it. When I come to delete it, there's crap everywhere. I don't understand why any app really needs my root password. It's bogus, and it should stop.
There.

Agreed. It's extremely annoying in any case, and if it's shareware I don't even install it which guarantees a lost sale.

What apps are you thinking of, out of curiosity? Most of the shareware apps I download other than obvious things like hacks and plugins are drag-and-droppable.

To be clear, I'm talking about all apps, not shareware ones in particular.

Limewire, for one, requires the admin password.

And I agree with OP. Whenever I come across something that requires admin access I check it with Pacifist first to see what it contains and if I can extract it directly from the installer package.
