Hi All,

Now, I'm not quite sure how many professional photographers use this forum, but yesterday I installed the Photoshop upgrade from CS2 to CS3. There appeared to be no problem upgrading from the DVD-ROM. This includes upgrading Bridge CS2 to CS3. Bridge is essential to my workflow and Bridge CS3 which seemed to be fine after installation yesterday, has got progressively erratic today and now has become unusable and unresponsive.

I use Adobe Camera RAW to convert the NEF (Nikon Electronic Format - Nikon's RAW file format) files from my Nikon D2X cameras, viewing them in Bridge, and converting via Photoshop to jpegs for my clients. Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) has been updated to v.4.0 along with the CS3 upgrade. I was previously using ACR 3.7 in Bridge CS2/Photoshop CS2 without any problems. New features have been added to ACR and initially the 'Red-Eye' tool wasn't working. Intermittently now nothing works or locks up.

Apple PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0GHz/ATI Radeon 9600 Pro/8Gb PC3200U DDR SDRAM
Apple PoweBook G4 1.5GHz/ATI Mobility Radeon 9700/2Gb PC2700U DDR SDRAM

Could these problems be IntelMac/PowerPC related, given that CS3 has been released to take advantage of newer Intel chips ?

Has anyone else experienced similar problems ? Photoshop CS3 seems to still be working OK, but Bridge CS3 and ACR 4.0 aren't. Users of the full Creative Suite will no doubt use Bridge and it would be interesting to discover if they're experiencing problems.

Thanks,

Pete S.

I fear you may have jumped in too quick, I'd have waited until issues were known and a 3.01 update released if necessary. Could you down-grade back to CS2?

I don't think downgrading like the other poster recommended. I've been using CS3 now for about a week using bridge pretty heavily and I've not incurred any issues.

I'd recommend deleting the bridge plist file, uninstalling cs2, and reinstalling cs3. Sounds like something go corrupt.

If it were a bug, I think there'd be a whole lot of threads screaming about these issues, I'm not saying it isn't a bug but so far I've not heard too many complaints about cs3.

Thanks,

I've done a reinstall of Photshop/BridgeCS3 from the DVD-ROM, not a full reistall, but using the option of 'Install or Reinstall' which promises to "Install additional components, or reinstall existing ones".....

Photoshop/Bridge CS2 hasn't been overwritten and can still be used. CS3 seems to be working fairly well now, although there is some odd behaviour with thumbnails with Edit>Generate High Quality Thumbnails, Bridge re-building thumbnails using an Auto setting which doesn't appear to affect changes made in ACR 4.0

I need to check all the preferences and if there is a problem, hopefully it'll be sorted in the first small upgrade. Adobe have often released a X.0.1 upgrade a few months after full release versions of Photoshop.

Still haven't got the 'Red-Eye' function back in ACR 4.0.....

I take your point about if it were a serious bug there would be a whole lot of threads screaming about these issues. The only problems I've heard about are installation problems, especially if the beta version was installed.

Thanks again.

Pete.

Try dragging around the entire eye to get red-eye to work. Or increase the exposure of the image to brighten the red eye. You can always set exposure back afterwards (I'm assuming a raw file).

Hi Tomrock,

Thanks very much for that tip. I'm not sure why I didn't think about doing it before. It's been changed to a click and drag square marquee type tool which requires the whole affected pupil to be inside.

Since the introduction of the Red-eye tool, in CS2 I think, the RE has been a single click within the pupil. Naturally, I assumed it would remain so. The previous tool was very good, even when the pupils are not bright red. I can test out the capabilities now. ACR 4.0 should improve my overall workflow, especially with the new combination of 'Recovery', 'Fill Light' and 'Blacks'.

Thanks for the help,

Pete
