Just as a FYI, Pages documents are packages. If you control (or right) click the file and select Show Package Contents you will find an Index.xml.gz file inside the package (along with the individual image files for any content placed in the pages document). Copy this and paste it onto e.g. your desktop, unzip it to reveal the Index.xml file and drag and drop that to e.g. Safari and you will see the unformatted text of the Pages document.

XML isn't exactly plain text. I mean, yes, in the computer geek sense it is, but for the average user it's not very useful.

It's too bad there isn't a free 30-day Pages demo.

There is certainly some irony that TextEdit is able to open the competitor's files (.doc) but not .pages files.

FWIW, the index.xml is rendered as plain text in Safari, only without any formatting or line breaks at all. You don't see any of the xml code.

I tried that in Safari earlier, and besides the lack of line breaks, I also got a bunch of that page-layout placeholder text, y'know "Lorem Ipsum Dolor" etc. Doesn't seem like the funnest thing to deal with. Especially if the OP's file has lots of line breaks.

Speaking of the OP, I'm about to PM him/her/it. I made a request like this with a FileMaker file a few months back, so I may as well give back to the community..

New Macs come with an iWork trial. If you have this, it should be good for 30 days to do whatever you like. Such as open this doc and print or save as PDF.
