I'm looking for some software that will let me do two different things. This would be full time so something like a Pref Pane would be better than leaving a sound editing app open 24-7 to get these effects.

One is that I want my Mac to play its sound input through its sound output. That way I can plug a device into the sound input on my mac. And I can plug my mac into a pair of speakers. And any audio from the mac or the other device, will play right through the Mac's speakers, all neat and clean, and with as few cables as possible.

The second thing I want to do, full time, is switch my audio channels. Make left right, and make right left. I need this because the speakers I bought have very short cables. My computer is on the left, but the right speaker is the 'control' speaker. The cables won't reach, but if I switch them and put the control speaker on the left, and the left speaker on the right, they should be just long enough to work. And again, I'd want all audio to be switched, all the time.

Any ideas?

Well I found the sound play through program here:
http://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies/

Its called LineIn and apparently this is EXACTLY what it does. Now I just need a stereo channel switcher...

What speakers do you have? If it's speakers using separate lines for each stereo channel (RCA, TS/TRS) and you've got it hooked up from the line-/headphones-out on your Mac you can just switch them around. (For example, in case of RCA, red to white and white to red.)

They are a cheaper set of speakers. The right speaker is the main with all the controls. It plugs into the computer with a headphone jack. There is no easy way to switch channels, unless someone makes a patch cable for minijacks that switches channels internally. But id rather do it with (free) software, vs get yet another cable...

You might be able to get it done with Soundflower. With the Soundflowerbed app open, click the flower in the top right corner, go to Soundflower (2ch) and then under Routing, route channel one to built-in audio [2] etc.

To switch channels around, open up Audio Midi Setup located in your Utilities folder. With your output selected, click on the "Configure Speakers" button, and then switch 1 to 2 and 2 to 1. This is a OS X level change and will then apply to any sound you play through any application.

The settings in Audio Midi Setup are implemented directly in CoreAudio and are saved across restarts, and remembered for various audio interfaces when they're connected/reconnected.
