Been using MacOSX's Mail.app since it first came out with my .Mac account(only). This morning, when i launched it, it would not display anything in my inbox and i'd get the menacing spinning beachball. i force-quit it several times, but couldnt get it to go into my mail.

So i navigated to my /Library/Preference folder and deleted the 'com.apple.mail.plist' file to the trash. then i relaunched Mail, and it foud my .Mac preferences and went out and got all my .Mac mail from the server.

The strange this is when i opened up my trash folder (OSX's trash), i saw a few attachments in there that i had received over the last year. no particular order, just some random ones, along with the 'com.apple.mail.plist' i had just deleted.

Does anyone have any idea whats going on here ? the attachments are still in their respctive email. but im just baffled as to why there was a copy of them i nthe trash. anyone else experience this ?

Cheers

When you delete an e-mail that contains an attachment, if that attachment had been downloaded by Mail for viewing, it will send the attachment to trash on deletion of the e-mail. Since your client re-downloaded all your mail, the earlier e-mails which were deleted, sent their attachments to the Trash.

But i havent deleted the emails from my account. i only deleted the 'com.apple.mail.plist' file, and resynced my mailbox with .Mac... i hadnt even viewed those emails recently, and they were pretty randomly chosen emails from my inbox from which the attachments alone were moved to the trash (not the Mail's trash, but the system's trash)

If you double-click an attachment in Mail it downloads them to ~/Library/Mail Downloads/ and opens them from there for you. Later the attachments are deleted from there (or not – sometimes they seem to stay there forever). Maybe trashed those for you after you deleted its preferences.
