My wife is trying to get a handle on where all of her picture files really are on her iBook. I cannot find any way for the user to get iPhoto to give more than the file name for a file, and I really want to get the whole location. Is this possible, and if so how? She's running 10.3.something, and we're not ready to buy 10.4 to upgrade her just yet (we may just skip to 10.5), so Spotlight is out.

I think this depends on whether you've edited the photos or not some will be in different locations within Pictures>>>iPhoto Library
Best thing to do it control click the photo in iPhoto and click on Show File.... that way youll defiantly get the right photo version (i presume that function is there in older iPhoto versions)

Is this because she has come from Windows? I used to want to do this too, but there is really no reason to mess with this on the Mac. iPhoto will look after things, just back up your user account regularly. If you want to export a photo, just drag it to the desktop, or to whatever app you want to use (or use the export menu).
As Richard says, if you really want to do this it will be in either the 'modified' or 'original' folders in Pictures / iPhoto library.
Good call on Tiger at this point - tough it out until Leopard appears.

The contextual menu has "Show file" and "Show original file". What else do you need?
You might not like the file management of iPhoto, but why care at all? You can use drag and drop from within iPhoto to export pictures.

This is for being able to upload various versions of pictures to web sites. The sites she uses are not at all "drag and drop" friendly, so she needs to navigate to the file system location of the file in order to specify it.

I do NOT see either "Show File" or "Show Original File" in the contextual menu. I see "Show More Info" which provides photographic information. Seriously, if I'd seen "Show File," I'd have been done and would not have asked this question. Which mode must iPhoto be in (as in "Organize", "Edit", etc.or something else) to have those particular context menu options?

Hmmm. My contextual menu does have 'show file'. I'm not sure why yours would not. I have it in the default thumbnails.
To upload to a website, I would make a new directory, and drag the files you want to upload to it.
What site is it? Many have iPhoto pluggins.
Otherwise, got to Home / Pictures / iPhoto library / originals or modified.

Searched high and low, and no "file" anything in any viewing mode. She's running iPhoto 2, if that makes a difference. I'll fire it up on my MBP and see what I see there.

Yep, in iPhoto 6 there ARE "file" context menu items. Gonna have to look into getting her upgraded I guess.
I had thought she was pretty well up to date, since she seems to get more software updates on her iBook than I do on the MBP. Who knew?

Does iLife 6 come with Tiger, or is it "preloaded" software on a new Mac? There's a not so negligible cost involved either way, but I want to get her what she needs most, and we were planning to upgrade her to Tiger anyway...

It does not come with Tiger - still - I don't think she needs it. You can just go to the location where they are, or just drag them to a new (temp) folder.

Caution has been thrown to the wind-I ordered both Tiger and iLife 6 for her. She should have them within a couple of days.
I guess this is now a question for the Mac OS forum, but should I do an Archive and Install? Is that the method that keeps her programs and documents?

No, Tiger will update without destroying anything. You should backup though. You'll like Tiger. And iLife. Also - you know about household licenses?

I've been running Tiger on my MBP since I got it, and I do like how it works better than Panther, particularly on my wife's iBook. and other than the iLife "family pack," I know nothing about household licenses. Tell me more...

That's what I'm thinking about as household licenses.

I already have iLife 6 because it came with the MBP, and my wife's iBook is the only other Mac in the house, so a family pack wouldn't help us on that. Thanks for the heads up, though. According to Apple, my software should ship today and I should get it tomorrow or the next day. Gotta love Apple's promptness!
