I'm about to upgrade my wife's 800MHz G4 iBook, both the OS from Panther to Tiger and upgrading at least iPhoto. Is it better to do the OS upgrade before I upgrade the apps? What should I look out for when doing this?

It shouldn't matter much. In case you are doing an "Archive & Install" (see my other reply) do the system upgrade first and then install the applications, so if the apps want to install something into the Library folder it's still there and not being archived by the Archive & Install of the system.
Basically I think you are making too much an issue out of this. Pop in the disks and follow the default instructions and all will work out fine.

I'd believe that I'm overcomplicating this-I've never had reason to upgrade anything on any Mac. But I DO have experience with Windows computers giving me a royal pain if I did things out of sequence. And of course doing anything to a Windows OS risks hosing everything, so I'm paranoid. If I don't have to be paranoid, then I have yet another reason to love Macs!
Thanks!

There's not really much to worry about, but I'd upgrade the OS first since some apps simply won't install on older OS versions, whereas the OS will install no matter what versions of apps are there. No real danger of hosing anything, though.

Well the OS upgrade from the latest version of Panther to the latest version of Tiger went off without a hitch; now I need to get her off of the iBook where she's playing with all the new features so I can update iPhoto for her!
Again, ya gotta love Macs for making it hard to do something bad, and easy to do anything good.
Thanks again!
