Is NeoOffice considered the best MS-Office alternative/replacement for OS X?
I've used OpenOffice on Windoze quite a bit and like it there.
Thanks in advance!

It depends on how do you define "best". On Mac it's definitely easier to install than OpenOffice.org, and it looks more native (though still not really). It's free, so just give it a try and decide for yourself.

OpenOffice isn't that hard to install. It does take more work than a normal Mac program but not much more work. Basically all you have to do is install the X11 program from your Apple CD that came with your computer and then install OpenOffice.
OpenOffice doesn't look as pretty as NeoOffice because it doesn't have that native look but they are trying to add they aqua look for the next major update for Mac: porting: OpenOffice.org (Aqua Development) Just like Firefox and Camino, NeoOffice is based on OpenOffice so they function very similar.
I believe NeoOffice has some other native Mac features that OpenOffice doesn't but I'm not sure about that. I'm currently new to these two programs and I'm trying them both out to see which one I like but NeoOffice definitely feels like it was made exclusively for Mac and not a program that was created for several operating systems. That may or may not change once aqua is created for OpenOffice. Either way Microsoft doesn't get any money from me.

Firefox and Camino are not based on OpenOffice.

What I meant was Camino is based on Firefox like NeoOffice is based on OpenOffice. Sorry I messed up the analogy.

There is no competition. NeoOffice (which is OpenOffice.org, but with a modified backend that lets it run natively in OS X using Mac UI paradigms - this is nothing like Camino relative to Firefox, which is an entirely new UI on top of the Gecko rendering engine) is much better to use than OpenOffice.org in X11.

Neo Office is great. It's not a resource hog like MS Office, and it can import/export into MS Office format. It's perfect for a student on a budget.
However, once MS Office '08 is released, it might be the best choice. We will see about that soon I suppose.

I use Bean its an open source non-nonsence word processor for simple writing. I'm in University and I've found this program a must have for writing papers and research assignments.

Are you nuts? Until the latest update (patch 6) NeoOffice was dog-slow on my iBook G4. Now it's tolerable, but still not as fast as Office 2004.
That said, I still highly recommend NeoOffice.

It varies from computer to computer. On Intel Macs, NeoOffice and MS Office are comparable in speed. Also, Neo benefits from having large amounts of memory available: it can be painful with less that 1 GB.
I still <3 NeoOffice, even though the Aqua OpenOffice.org is making significant progress.

Since both are free, there's no real harm in having oo and neo both installed, and playing with them both to see which you like.

Office is still not native, right? So in other words NeoOffice is as slow as Office in emulation.
And I do have 1GB RAM.
