In the education store at apple.com, we have Final Cut Studio 2 Academic, which costs only $699, and then in the normal store, we have Final Cut Studio 2 for $1299.

What's the difference between them? There's gotta be a difference, because the first one is half the price! Unless they've decided to give really good discounts to students?

I'm about to buy Final Cut Studio, and if the $699 version isn't missing anything, I can't really afford $1299 and I think i'll buy that one.

The cost.... That's it.

I purchased and used the Academic version with my yearbook staff (see sig), and I have seen no limitations in the product. There are no differences in my experience.

Functionally, there is none.

If FC Studio underlies the same restrictions as Aperture, then you cannot buy an update for your academic version, i. e. when FC Studio 3 comes out, you have to pay the `full' (academic or not) price for it. Other than that, they've decided to give a very good discount to students
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

It's pretty much what it appears to be. A well priced educational edition so students can afford to get the necessary tools for home use, almost all productivity software has a lower-priced academic edition. The End-User Agreement directs it is only for students *while* they are students and implies is not to be used after graduation. And, as noted, it's serial number will not allow any future upgrade editions to work.

Generally, for most retailers, you have to supply a current student ID to qualify to buy the Academic edition.
