The computer is up and running OS X 4.9.
For some reason, iPhoto and iMovie (and probably other applications too, but I didn't check) are nowhere to be found on the computer. Is there a way to load the missing applications by using the OS X install disks without erasing everything. This is not my computer and the last thing I want to do is rush in to "help" only to delete my friends files.
The "please read me first" file on the Install Disk #1 said that to install things like iPhoto, I had to click on "Install OS X and applications". Then it had some blurb about "erasing" I got confused and decided it best to ask you folks. Thanks in advance for any help.

How did you get 10.4 on the machine without using the original installer disks?
Anyway, if you have the original disks you can use "Pacifist" to grab the installers out of the default stuff and install them. It's likely they will be older versions, though.

It's not my machine so I'm not sure how OS X is there without iPhoto and the like. The machine belongs to non-computer savvy folks (even less so than I) and I assume someone else "got it up and running for them" and screwed up some how. Anyway, is "Pacifist" something on the installer disks or is is a separate program? Thanks again.

Pacifist is a separate program. Search for it on Versiontracker.com
Also, you might just try to search for iPhoto or iMovie via spotlight or the old Find command (apple f in the finder). It may well be that someone accidentally moved the programs into a nearby folder. My students do that from time to time, so the program is there, just not where anyone would expect it.
That said, I would be inclined to format the drive and start with a fresh install, backing up any desired files first, of course. Then run software update until it tells you your software is up to date. It would probably be the best thing for all involved in the long run.
