You should be able to drop a particular folder into the Source sidebar and have it add like that.

You need to import them folder by folder to maintain the organization.

Stay out of the finder entirely! You risk losing photos, corrupting photos, etc. Forget the library in finder is there! Do anything and everything you want to do to your photos from within the iPhoto app. Use the import function of the app to get your photos into iPhoto. Let your mac do the work for you -- micromanaging is so Windows!

Don't add pictures using the finder. Actually, as long as you have a backup, delete the photos from the Pictures folder when you have imported them.

Skybolt is quite right. Playing around with the iPhoto library is a dangerous business. Just let iPhoto itself import the photos.

You can, but if you do, you should not use iPhoto. You should not use the finder to putz with iPhotos directory structure. If you want to use the Pictures directory to store other photos, Finder Away there, but not in iPhoto. Once you import something with iPhoto, don't putz with it with the Finder.
People are telling you not to use the finder, because it sucks when compared to iPhoto. What you are describing is possible, just not very user friendly, which is why people are trying to tell you not to do it. If it's what you really want to do, then separate images you want to manage using the finder from the ones you want to manage using iPhoto, and put the thought of ever mixing them out of your mind.
