I have this 13 GB WMV of the Empire Strikes Back that's supposedly in 1080P. I want to know how I can convert it into a more useful file type- like an Mpeg-4 in H.264 (so I can still keep the HD). Any suggestions?

You might explain how you happened to have such an item in your possession. I really want to hear how you explain that. Lucasfilms has not released ANYTHING in WMV format, so it simply cannot be a legal copy. If you are talking about something YOU converted yourself for "personal use" (which might be legal under U.S. copyright laws), then you must realize that whatever tools you used to create that monster file would probably have equivalents that would produce MPEG-4 or H.264 outputs, so that particular avenue is not going to wash here.
In case you hadn't picked up on our not-so-subtle message, piracy of any kind in any medium is not tolerated on these forums. ANYONE reading this should take that as a warning.

Sorry, if it is obvious to us that he did not obtain the file in a legal manner, then the discussion is off limits here. Plain and simple. As ghporter said, if he had to ask, he doesn't have a legal copy, especially as was pointed out, Lucasfilm has NOT released Star Wars in HD format yet.
Now, if he had said he had a 13 GB WMV file that was HD content that he needed help converting (and not told us what was in the file), then we could discuss it here.

If it was ever broadcast on an HD OTA or cable channel, he may have recorded it with a TV card or cable box.

What's wrong with just saying you have an HD WMV file and not saying what's in it?
Do you really want this place to come to the attention of the MPAA and get labeled a pirate site?
Better to err on the side of caution and not allow discussion of piracy.

Why would you record as 1080p from a VHS source?

Wow! Such clarity! Such great reproduction of VHS distortion, color barring, and static! Incredible!!!!
I'd miss the old commercials, though. For some TV that was the best part!
