I've been trying to sort out and clean up a friends PowerBook G4. The first think to do was to remove the abomination that is Norton from the machine, which is running 10.3.9 but will be soon running 10.4.10.

The owner was running Norton firewall which I have switched off, however I cannot restart OS X's firewall option as it thinks that Norton Firewall is still running, and indeed in terminal it shows that after a restart the only app running is Norton Firewall.

Does anyone know where the little b****r could be hiding?

Check your Login Items in System Preferences. Also, check the following locations:

/Library/StartupItems
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/LaunchAgents

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
