Hi,

I have recently migrated from PC land, and am still slowly working my way around with my Mac.

Something I can't resolve though - I don't want to use Mail as my default mail client. For example, when in Acrobat or some other program, I click on a link to email someone, I don't want Mail to open.

I'm trying to convert my emails to purely web-based gmail.

Anyone know how to do this?

Thanks in advance.

Well, if you click on a link to e-mail someone, it isn't going to be possible for the OS to open your browser, open GMail, and put the address in the To: field of a message for you so my first bit of advice would be to just not do that.

To change the default e-mail client, you need to open Mail and change the setting in the General preferences. I would pick your browser as the default app to see if that will work to at least launch it when you do this.

Personally, I would just set up GMail in Mail or Thunderbird rather than using the web interface exclusively - the main reason would be that you will then have an offline back up of all your e-mails. Without it, you are relying on Google not losing your data for you and, as good as they are, it is still possible that one day they have a catastrophic failure that wipes out your account. Without an offline backup you would be utterly screwed.

You could download Gmail Notifier and use that to set Gmail as the standard e-mail program. Or use Mail once Gmail Notifier is installed - to change the mail client.

I've done this, my primary e-mail is the one I have with Google's Gmail. I just decided to use Mail for Gmail, because I like Mail in general. You can find out how to use Mail for Gmail, if you want, by looking at Gmail's support site. It's in there somewhere.

I use Apple Mail to access my Gmail account as a pop account. The best of both worlds ....
web based access when away and still stored on my computer when at home!

Gmail: Help Center - Configuring your email client: Apple Mail
