All you have to do is drag them onto the iTunes window. I hope you're not messing around in the iTunes Library folder itself.
You say, "it's not letting me." Please be more specific. What happens?

Along the same line of discussion, how does one "import" from the iTunes menu? When I try "importing" tunes, it takes me to all sorts of other files on the hard drive. Not a very intuitive setup IMHO.
Also, when I have done the drag & drop, it seems that iTunes turned the mp3 file into an m4p file?
I'll have to look again to be sure.
Any hope of eventually moving purchased iTunes onto a Palm T/X or other mp3 player?
Fortunately, some of the best music ever created is now available on CD (see
www.realclassicrock.com for a visit to the underground FM stations of yesteryear) so I'm
not complaining too much.

I have never seen that, and it certainly is not standard behavior, nor is it expected or even possible!
m4p is DRM-protected audio, which is ONLY available via the iTunes store.
Where are you dragging the files? You need to drag either into a playlist that you can modify (i.e. not an intelligent playlist) or into the music library.
If you drag a whole bunch or a folder of files into the left-hand playlist pane, iTunes will automatically create a new playlist of those files.
