Hello, I've recently switched from a life of Windows to a Mac Pro. I own my own business and use it as a development machine. I purchased MS Office 2004 Standard to keep up with the Jones' of the business world (unfortunately).

Recently Excel has started crashing when opening documents that were brought over from my Windows machine. They've progressively been getting slower and slower while opening and final it's a full crash. What happens is the .xls file opens, slowly, then you see it and then the program quits giving this error:

The application Excel quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other application are not affected. Click Reopen to open the application again ... then it displays three buttons to choose from; close, report ... and reopen.

This is the second type of error message though. The first I'm not receiving anymore and it said something about the Microsoft Framework Library not being able to load.

However, if I create a .xls file as a test and save it to my desktop all is well and it opens just fine.

I've tried everything, removing and installing Office, using NeoOffice to resave the file, deleting the Microsoft preferences folder, repairing disk permissions ... everything. Nothing works.

When I drop a few hundred dollars on a product I expect it to work. Once again my computing experience is infected by Microsoft. Please help! Thanks.

I've fixed my problem after all day of getting crazy over it.

While researching my own problem throughout today I was reading tons of forums on MS Office 2004 Standard problems. I began to notice a commonality between them all and it was fonts. I thought for sure this couldn't be my problem as I was getting no error messages that were specific to font issues. I even hand-removed my font cache files from the metadata folder.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Font Finagler:
Font Finagler

Unbelievable. It worked like a charm. I installed, clear my font caches and restarted. Boom, I can now open older documents with speed and ease. Amazing. I hate Microsoft.
