It's not caused by a virus.

Open the program "Console" from Applications->Utilities, try to launch one of those apps and then tell us what the console says.

When you say they don't open, what happens?

Which OS are you running and what version are the Apps?

Have you installed/updated anything lately?

I doubt it's a virus, as far as I know there aren't any in the wild, yet....

Did you run Monolingual?

If your Intel native programs are running and your PowerPC programs are not, then you have a problem with Rosetta. Rosetta runs "behind the scenes" to allow PPC programs to run on your MacBook. Reinstall the system (Archive & Install), do the updates and all will be well. As TETENAL alludes, do not do a custom install that eliminates language support.

You can try and use an app like OnyX to Optimize the system. It's also called prebinding. Do a full Optimization and reboot the computer. I don't know if it will work but I heard that the latest QuickTime will break PPC programs under some circumstances. And the fix is to Optimize the system also called prebinding.

But if you have used that dreadful app called Monolingual to remove PPC code, then ... reinstall OS X.

If you didn't run Monolingual, then maybe the QuickTime issue causes your problems.

MacNN | Apple to investigate QuickTime 7.2 flaw

To reinstall the system follow these instructions:

Before you perform a reinstall, I recommend you try following these instructions from Apple:

Most of the systems I've seen with this problem are fixed with the 10.4.10 combo update. However I have one that gives the
error 11 running update_prebinding_core
error. I've since installed the QT 7.3.2 update as well as all other current updates with no success. Any other suggestions?
