Ok. So I love my MacBook, but I got a disgustingly small hard drive in it and now I'm down to 5 gigs left. The most obvious way to free up space is move my iTunes library to my new external-hard drive, but I don't want to lose my star-ratings and play-counts that I use in various smart playlists for my iPod.

Other than moving the files in Finder and then locating each separate "missing" song in iTunes, is there a way to pull this off?

My computer and I would appreciate your brilliance in this matter...

Thanks!

You won't loose a thing. Just take your iTunes folder in your Music folder, and copy it to your external drive. Then on your external drive, make an alias of the iTunes folder. Move this alias into your Music folder on your Macbook, replacing the actual iTunes folder that is there now (be sure to remove the word "alias" from the folder name. Lastly, fire up iTunes. If your external drive is plugged in, the alias will point iTunes to your external drive, and everything will be working from there. All your meta data will remain intact.

Or you could just copy the folder over, and go into iTunes prefs and click on advanced, and tell itunes where your music folder is now located. . . .
