I'm using AddressBook.app 4.0.5 (487) under Mac OS X 10.4.10, and at some point Apple implemented the spouse field in the schema. Trouble is, it doesn't function in an intuitive way. It doesn't intelligently include the spouse in lists and labels, it doesn't mirror shared information like the home address ... in other words, it's next to useless.
Why???

Good idea! Send a feature request to Apple.

I think Apple intends it to be an information field, so when you meet Joe Blow at the company picnic, you'll remember his wife's name.

They could implement an entire family-tree style linking of people, too. I wondered about that when you have spouse, children, friend, etc.
It would be cool to link it to the actual record (especially if you have the common address for the entire family record where you change it for one and the group changes). I'd love for Apple to implement this, but don't know imperative they would find the request.

So Apple's software should be as lame as Palm? I'm stuck creating at least three records for each couple: Typically, one for their shared home address, then another two for each of their work addresses, e-mail addresses, cell numbers and other stuff that applies to one member of the couple and not the other. It's inefficient, it's non-relational, and above all, it sucks.
I think I'm just tired of all the lame PIMs we've had to endure for years. I guess I'll wait for Chandler to arrive or just build my own, dammit.

At least, it should actually link to the spouse's entry in address book.

Address Book and iCal really haven't seen significant improvements since Panther. I'm hoping Leopard will help, but I'm not holding my breath.

It does, at least in Tiger (10.4). If you click on the spouse field and you have another entry with the spouse's name in the database, AddressBook will open a new window with the spouse information.

Ha, thanks, didn't know that - it would be good to be able to type the name and get a drop down to click to confirm a record for those who don't have the same name.
