I updated my iTunes from 4-point-something to 7.3.1 and the first thing I noticed is a problem, where the duration listing in the browser gets screwed up, for any song that I play. The song still plays in its entirety, but the timeline is only the length of time that the duration listing changed to. For example, while playing a song that’s 5 min 34 seconds in duration, the duration listing in the itunes browser will change to only 5 seconds, and in the timeline, the play marker would only take 5 seconds to reach the end, with the audio continuing on its playback as normal. I have a lot of 2+hour mp3 files of lectures that I’ve recorded, and I really need to be able to scrub the play marker back and forth while I listen to them, but this version of iTunes isn’t letting me do that. I’ve also tried updating to 7.3.2, but the problem still exists.

Does anyone know of this problem, perhaps even a solution to it? I’d be fine with downgrading the app, if that’s possible.

For reference, I’m on a 1.3ghz ibook, running OS 10.4.10.

Hi Forbodium, I haven't encountered your issue before .... have you tried deleting the files from your iTunes Browser and re-importing them? Another suggestion is to encode the files as AAC or WAVE by Control/Right-Clicking the file within iTunes and selecting 'Convert Selection To ... '. It will depend on how you have your prefs set as to what format will show as an option here.

Then you could reverse the conversion to see if that changes anything. I know it all sounds a bit long-winded but I've had success in the past by doing this.

If you go to:

iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing

Then in the 'Import Using' pull-down menu, you can set the encoder to whatever you choose.

Solved by dumping iTunes 7.3.2 and then re-installing iTunes 4.8. I also discovered that 7.3.2 doesn’t allow drag/drop to the interface, so I wasn’t going to bother trying to make the duration of the files proper.

Lesson learned: never update anything that already works well, without first confirming that the new version is ready for mass distribution.

Do you mean dragging songs into the library? Because you can, at least on a MacBook.

Yes, I was dragging audio files to the library (as I had been accustomed to doing with version 4.8) and they wouldn't show up. Matters not now though, as 4.8 is where it's at, for me. I doubt that I need anything which was introduced in 7.x.

You're running OS X 10.4.10 with iTunes FOUR? I'm surprised that works at all!

Perhaps some other components, like QuickTime, needed updating for iTunes 7 to work?

I had updated Quicktime before updating iTunes. My Quicktime Player says version 7.2.

There should not be any doubt of iTunes 4.8's power. It does more of what I want than 7.3.x does. I would still appreciate a bookmarking feature, but first they need to give back the drag-n-drop capability and fix the duration/timeline problem. The drag-n-drop and timeline features are crucial to what I use iTunes for. Four Point Eight and all is well again (though having to import all my audio again, after the downdating process, was a pain).

I hear what your saying - and don't deny that the problems exist for you, but I have never heard of either problem happening to anyone before. That makes me think it is not a general problem with the app, but rather some problem with your installation of it.

Had you restarted after upgrading quicktime?
Did you try starting from an clean (no preferences) iTunes7 and not importing the library? (perhaps the translator that imports the itunes library from previous versions was expecting a more recent library file than 4.8)

I've been trying to track down why all of a sudden my Airport Express is dropping my music. I'm going to go back to when everything worked well system-wise. I've reinstalled 10.4.8 (yeah, that was fun) and I'm trying to track down a 7.1 or so iTunes installer. Any idea where I could find that version. Apple in theri infinite wisdom only allows for 7.3.2 now.

Hey thanks.
Unfortunately I think these are for Windows. The files are in .exe form.

I did find them here:
