I have a lot of .avi files which are encoded with XVid and Mp3, or some Divx variant, all of which are essentially mpeg4.

Is there a way to simply transcode these .avi's into a new container format, .mov, so that they could hopefully be read on an iPod/iPhone/AppleTV?

I'd rather than re-encode everything.

Yes, if you download and install the plug-ins necessary to read DivX files (which I am sure you already have) then you can transcode all you want. If you want to use the Quicktime Player to do this (via its export feature) you need to upgrade to Quicktime Pro.

Transcoding involves re-encoding.

I wouldn't buy QT Pro to do this though. ffmpeg will do this, and there is a GUI for ffmpeg called ffmpegx.

If what you need is to simply change the wrapper from avi to mov so that iTunes will play your files without transcoding, what you need is DivX Doctor II. Sadly this software is no longer updated. It works fine though, but have trouble with 32+ character filenames.

No, you'll need to transcode everything. As always, I recommend MPEG Streamclip.

QT Pro is pretty much useless.

In order to burn your encoded movie files into DVDs you would need to either find a DVD authoring app such as iDVD used in conjunction with iMovie that would allow you to create titles and chapter marks, or else encode the video as a straight MPEG-2 DVD without titles and chapters using a tool such as ffmpeg/ffmpegX.

Either way, you will be losing quality in compressing your video again. If you want to pirate video and want it on DVD, find a DVD-rip, don't go for DivX, XVid, or any of the other transcoded movie formats.

Get iSquint. Drag the avi's into its window and convert to mp4, for iPod or TV, whichever you want. It will even automatically copy the converted files into iTunes for you.

Uisce
