So my new macbook came in the mail a few hours ago (hooray!!), and I need a little help...
1. I downloaded firefox, but each time I open it, there's a small square window that opens with it.. it's not so much a problem as it is an annoyance. Any ideas on how to make this stop appearing?
2. All websites are working wonderfully except the most important one, google, so I can't access my gmail account. The page just won't load. I've restarted many times, but it still refuses to work. Gmail also won't load in Safari. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me!

โงโ3 creates a screenshot. โงโ4 gives you a a cross-hair that lets you select an area for a screenshot. Use this to make a screenshot of the "small square window" and use a hosting service like TinyPic - Share The Experience! to post it in this forum.
Google Mail should work in Firefox and somewhat in Safari. Try mail.google.com as an alternative address. Maybe there is some DNS glitch with your ISP at the moment.

I tried mail.google.com, but still no luck; the header says "loading" and the page is completely white

You haven't installed Firefox properly would be my guess. From your description, I suspect that what is happening is that you are launching Firefox from the disk image it is delivered on. The small window you see open is the one with the Firefox icon being dragged to an image of the Applications folder, yes? If so, I am right.
To solve the problem you have to first install the application - mount the disk image, drag and drop the Firefox icon to your /Applications folder to copy it there to install it. Unmount the disk image by ejecting it. Delete the original .dmg (disk image) file that you downloaded to obtain Firefox. Run Firefox from the copy you installed into the applications folder. Things should now work properly.

Make sure Java is enabled. Not sure, but that sounds like the problem to be on both Safari and Firefox. Gmail should work if it's not enabled, but then the number of features declines.

i am experiencing same problem with gmail. it cannot load - same as the other users reported. blank screen but with a word ...loading. my gmail loads in other PCs but not my iBookG4. This just happens the last week. Other features of google works except gmail and blogger.
i use fire fox but think this is not related. it works before in my firefox/iBook G4.
but gmail loads in other PCs.

I'm thinking there's a problem with Gmail ...
Today (at moment) my attempt to log in gives me, "The service is currently not available. Please try again later.

That is Javascript, which is not the same as Java.
