Why can't I send emails through Mac OS X Mail when I'm using another internet connection (besides my main home connection)?
Thanks,
Mason

Most likely because you don't have access to your usual ISP's SMTP server.

Many ISPs block port 25 which is the default for the SMTP protocol. Swtich to port 587 in the Server settings for your account in Mail preferences and see if that helps.

Then you need an SMTP server you can use. We won't be able to help you figure out what it might be...

An SMTP server is a server used for sending and receiving email. All mail clients rely on a SMTP server to send messages. In order to send email through OS X Mail or any other standalone client, you will need to know your mail host's SMTP server name, as well as a port you can use to send mail on outside of the network (if any is provided).
If none are provided, you will either have to look into a VPN connection to the network, or setting up your own (the latter which is not difficult to do in OS X). However, there are often problems associated with doing the latter, particularly high spam scores due to reverse DNS resolution and such.
