two questions:

1.) if i edit in iphoto using iphoto, what happens to the original and the edit? will there be duplicates, or can I choose to delete the original or edit?

2.) if i edit using an external editor (photoshop), does iphoto automatically load the edit back in to the library? can i later remove the original?

iPhoto always keeps the original around for the "Revert to original" command. When you do use the "Revert to original" command, the edited copy is deleted. It doesn't matter whether you do the edit within iPhoto or use an external editor.

You should never manually delete the original. Generally, never touch the iPhoto Library folder/bundle from within the Finder. Messing with the iPhoto Library can lead to data loss (for example). That's why it's closed as a bundle in iPhoto 08.

Just select "Save" (⌘S) and save in the same location and with the same name it was opened with. Don't use "Save As...". If you use Photoshop and layers you might need to flatten layers into one background layer before it allows you to use Save and doesn't force you to use Save As.
