I cant believe it- the new version of Handbrake has blown me away with speed.

Handbrake .8 (encoding a DVD that has been copied to my HD) H.264/bitrate 1100kbps/2 pass)
~50-55fps on both passes

Handbrake .9 (encoding a DVD that has been copied to my HD) H.264/bitrate 1100kbps/2 pass) w/ turbo first pass activated
105-110 fps first pass +50%
~80 fps second pass +37%

I'm not sure what rewrite these boys did but O....M....G, I cant believe it. Swear, I thought it was a mistake at first.

That's impressive as Handbrake is one of the few programs that maxes my MacPro's four cores...nice.

Handbrake is really just glue to put a few different open source apps/libraries together. Probably improvements by the 'upstream' folks at the x264 project or similar.

Handbrake is a killer app. I use it several times per week.

UPDATE:

I'm sad to say but the number I quoted in the beginning of this thread are not accurate. With the release of HB .9 they included several options that were not included on prior releases of HB- for example to customize the type of deinterlacing to be done on a movie. When I set this option to slow, which I assume was the default on the prior versions the fps fell right back to their prior (slower) speeds ....

So no speed up, as far as I can tell on this version. I apologize.

You assumed incorrectly. Yes, there was only 1 deinterlace option in prior versions. This is now referred to as the Fast option in HB .9.

When previewing, the only method applied is Fast, so don't be concerned if you can't tell the difference. You will see it in the output.
What exactly is rotten in Denmark?
