I just used the Info window to make all my .xls documents "Open With" Numbers. Works fine, but all the documents now just have a generic white document icon. Does anyone know how to make them take on the Numbers icon? Or does this happen automatically for others and my OS isn't working properly?

Seems odd. Have you tried restarting your Mac?

Because Numbers doesn't include an icon file for .XLS files. Same with Pages and .DOC files.

You will need to modify the applications info.plist file to tell it to associate a particular file type with a particular icon file.

Thanks zro. I tried this (with a little help from Google!) but it still didn't update the icon, even though I added:
<key>CFBundleTypeIconFile</key>
<string>NumbersDocument</string>
to the
<key>CFBundleTypeExtensions</key>
<array>
<string>xls</string>

section of the info.plist.

I restarted the computer, but it doesn't seem to work in this case unfortunately. Has anyone else had any success with this? Its obviously just cosmetic, but I like it when my documents have icons that represent the application that opens them.

Yeah, its too bad, the icon didn't change for numbers or pages. I don't have office on the mac anymore and I'd rather see anything but a blank icon.

Dumb question on my part, but if you have Numbers set to open the .xls files, why not convert them to Numbers documents? You can still keep the .xls files as backup and still get the goodness of the Numbers icon

Not dumb at all - I converted all my own documents to Numbers/Pages, and they look fine. Its all the multitude of xls, doc, and ppt files that I export for collegues, or receive in email and view that are now just a white generic blur :-)
I was hopeful that there would be a simple maclike fix to make word/excel/ppt files stand out from each other given that each is associated to the appropriate iWork document, but its looking like I'll just have to show extensions and live with that for documents that are passing through.
