Hi
I use Transmission, and downloaded DivX because I read somewhere it is the program to use to watch DVD movies which were downloaded as torrent files.
When responding to this post, please keep in mind that I am extremely new to Transmission and to torrents in general.
I managed to download a full movie. The file on my desktop is chock full of .vob, bup and .ifo files, but I can't play it. What step am I missing?

You want to use VideoLAN Client to play .vob.
VLC media player - Overview
Just drag the VOB file to the player's playlist window, or open it from within the player.

What is with people now-a-days and not even trying to hide a little that they're downloading movies (Very likely) illegally?

No kidding. A couple years ago people would've just asked, How do I play VOB files? Google wasn't helpful though -- on the first page of results, I didn't see any suggest VLC.

You can also open a VIDEO_TS folder from Apple DVD Player's File menu. It will read the DVD from the hard drive as if it was an actual disc.

It's not a movie that is commercially available, its an unreleased documentary.
What is it with people these days, quick to judge and stick their nose in other people's business.

Just drag the VLC application (the orange cone) to your Applications folder. That's it. Ignore the rest of the stuff.

Since the original poster's question has been answered, I just want to point out that at least here in Europe, we have an utterly bizarre legal situation:
I am LEGALLY allowed to own backup copies of digital media I own.
It is LEGAL to produce copies of said media.
It is ILLEGAL to circumvent copy protection mechanisms.
So the only LEGAL way to obtain the backup copies I am entitled to own is to download them off the internet.
Since I'm legally entitled to those backup copies, the only person doing something illegal is the one SHARING the material, since he's not allowed to do so by the licensing terms of the media.
Enough to make your head explode if you ponder it too much.

I was reading yesterday that Canada's laws on the subject are also fairly irregular and lax.

Only thing is, with BitTorrent, you're continuously sharing what you download, so you're making available material that is most likely under copyright to people that may or may not own a license. It's a legal gray area and you always must be careful when you tread in untested waters.
