Seeing a recent article about out-of-office replies enabled on Entourage 2008, yet of course only with Exchange Servers, made me wonder could someone/team develop a new standard besides POP3 and IMAP? [I'm sure that my thought is not a novel one] Mozilla has an email client and web browsers, and of course there are SourceForge offerings too, so I wonder if someone might try to create a successor to Exchange that could be free (or not require Windows). Maybe even Google could offer one that works with gMail, Google calendars and apps. My relatively small company primarily has Mac users, and I'd really like not to buy a Windows Server with Exchange serving, but the "online" features like out-of-office, push-like email, expanded mobile interactions, calendar networking are quite nice. Thoughts?

There are many open source and commercial Exchange alternatives. Leading the pack right now seems to be Zimbra, which offers both a commercial and open source version. Kolab is another popular one, as is GroupWise.

Also, if you just need calendaring and don't want to get a full-fledged monolithic Groupware solution, check out the open source Apple iCal Server. The server will run on Linux and Unix (as well as OS X, of course), and works with Leopard iCal, Mozilla Sunbird, and other clients that support GroupDAV.
