For about a year or so, I've entertained the crazy idea of taking a Mac Mini, plugging it into my HDTV, plugging a Drobo for about a 2 terabyte storage area into the Mac Mini, and then ripping all of my movies into the Drobo. Then, I'd be in media center heaven. I'd use my existing Mac Mini, but it's the older type that can't work with my TV, so that's a wash.

However, next week I'm receiving my 60 GB Playstation 3 in the mail, and suddenly an idea came to my mind. What if I used the PS3 as the media player, my Mac Mini as the media holder. That way, my (and my familes) iPods would all sync to the Mac Mini, while Mr. Playstation 3 would simply do a network share and see the files on the Mac Mini to play them. Then I'd only have 1 thing plugged into the TV as my DVD/gaming/media streaming device.

So here's the magic question:

Both iTunes and the Playstation 3 are "MPEG-4" compatible - but are they the *same* MPEG-4 compatible? In other words, if I rip a movie using Handbrake and click on "iPod High Res" or PS3, I should be able to have one MPEG-4 file that iTunes, my iPods (especially if I buy an iPod Touch), and my PS3 could play. I'm not concerned with resolution - as long as it's TV quality, I'm perfectly happy with that. Is this assumption correct?

Either way, I'll find out at the end of next week when I fly back into town and start hooking stuff up, but I thought I'd throw this out to the group to see if there are any "gatchas" to consider before I get several hours into it and go "Ah, poop!"

Your gonna need 3rd party software to share your files with the ps3.... And at the moment i don't think any of them are particularly good. Twonkymedia is the one ive been using but its gonna cost you!!!

I thought the lastest PS3 firmware could access network shares, in which case I could just trip down the files directories, as in Storage/iTunes Library/etc/etc/etc/MyVideo.mp4 - but we'll see when I get it in. I could be wrong.

Oh - anyway, the big question is - can the iPod and the PS3 play the exact same MPEG-4 files? That way, even if I have to manually move them onto a memory stick, I can live with that since I'll just have 1 copy of the files to worry about, not juggling 2 different files for the same movie for different players.
