Sorry for the duplicate posts...
I recently upgraded to iPhoto '08 and really like the interface. It makes me want to look at my photos and interact with them. The problem is that, rather than rotating images on the fly using EXIF data (like every other image viewing software worth mentioning) it creates a duplicate of all "vertical" images imported into the library. The result is a bloated library with frivolous duplicates. With the option of copying imported files into the iPhoto library turned OFF I have a library several gigs in size, 99.9% of which are these rotated and re-saved images. Seems pretty obvious that iPhoto recognizes the rotate EXIF tag so I am wondering if anyone knows of a workaround for this or if anyone knows of a plugin that forces the software to not make rotated dupes and rotate images on the fly. It would be tremendously helpful and my poor hard drive would thank you.

I do not think that you can rotate images on the fly but you can get rid of the duplicates. I have iPhoto6. The program stores the original unrotated image and a modified rotated image. The program will display the auto rotated image. You can select the photo, go to the edit menu and select "revert to original." The program will display the unrotated original, and delete the modified image from the iPhoto library. I assume that iPhoto 08 will behave similarly.

I see, Thank you Hab. I actually have figured out sort of a lame work around. Xee has a lossless save function that allows you to save your rotated image without re-compressing at which point you can import them into iPhoto without getting the dupe images. Only problem, assuming the function actually does save losslessly, is that it's really time consuming and will cause the latest (as of 09-23-07) version of Xee to crash if you try to do it too fast. Anyone have a thought on this method? Kinda wondering if it really is lossless. Thanks guys.

Using the app iPhoto Diet, there is an option to delete rotated originals, and many more options, as well. Just be sure to read and understand what you are telling it to do -- don't press buttons too quickly!

iPhoto will rotate in a lossless way. You can select several of them and rotate them simultaneously. You could export the pics, delete the originals and then reimport them.
