I get really annoyed with Mail's behaviour with some IMAP servers I use. It keeps creating folders with the names it likes rather than the ones already created. This means that I have 2 folders for sent mail, 2 for Junk, 2 for deleted messages, etc. This is a problem when I am trying to find an e-mail.
Is there any way to force Mail to behave well or do I have to keep sending feedback to Apple to make this stop?

You just have to set the folders that you want to use for those purposes and it will be happy. To do this select the folder and then use the items under "Use this Mailbox for" from the Mailboxes menu.

Mail is not behaving unusual here. Every mail client needs some sort of sent folder, as well as a trash and/or drafts folder for those that support trash mailboxes and saving of drafts. There is nothing special about these folders, these are just ordinary folders that the client is using to file emails into. It is up to you to configure the client to use the folder names you want, as there is no real standardization on folder names used, unfortunately.

Thanks so much for this. I have never noticed the "Use Mailbox for" menu item before. It fixed the problem for me.

I know that Mail is not behaving badly or that there is no standard name for each of the folders. I am not a Mac OS X newbie and I don't need patronising, thanks. All I needed was to know how to fix the problem. Thanks to larkost I can now do this.
