Can I burn my TV programmes to a DVD and then play them in a commercial dvd player?

Of course you can. I feel confident that Toast as provided with various tv tuners provides a ready built system. Otherwise, you can roll your own. sam

Well, I don't know, but I am sure it is possible. I mean, there is no DRM reason why not, so it's just a matter of getting them into the right format, and then using something like toast or even iDVD to record them. Sorry - I don't know how to do it, but a bit of playing around should be possible.

Check out Handbrake which should be able to convert from one format to another and then Toast or Popcorn can burn a dvd. sam

Hmmm. Didn't know that. Any way to work around that as with iTunes music?

Which, presumably means they can only be played on my aurhorized Macs or through Apple tv.

Very annoying if that's the case.

Can it be done? Sure. See: analog hole.
Have you paid for the right to do it? No.

With music you can just burn it to cd, and reimport - DRM removed. Some small quality loss, I'm told, but I've never been able to hear the difference.

With Video, you could screen capture the content and sound and re-encode as you wish - lots of hassle though?!?

I never thought about burning purchased TV Shows or Music Video and played them back on a standalone DVD player.

That's true, isn't it? But also consider that in a moment of time not too long ago Apple took the decision to sell some DRM free music one day. Also, if I had AppleTV I could play my TV programmes the way I want.

I don't have a TV set so I thought I could watch then when I go visit my parents who do have one, by copying them onto a dvd.

So, even though I don't have the right to do it I would do it anyway if I could. There is a resentment that I share towards Apple a) for making digital content more expensive here in the UK and b) for not allowing me to use content that I pay for in a more flexible way.
