I'm currently using Opera to browse MacNN, as (for some reason) Safari 2.0 on my iBook is not letting me log in. I don't understand why, but it isn't.
However, using Opera has led me to the conclusion that Safari is the best browser for the less-capable Mac running OSX (see specs of the iBook below). When running Safari, I only get the beach-ball on Flash-heavy pages; in Opera 9.2, it appears quite frequently, and for no real reason.
As such, I think Safari is the best choice for browsing on the lower-spec Mac. Anyone else find this, or am I suffering some bizarre gremlin that's hampering Opera's performance?
Also, how do the other browsers handle on older Macs?

I second the nomination of Camino.

Flash just doesn't run well on G3's and older G4's.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Opera, and I think it's a great browser. But it does beach-ball quite a bit for no apparent reason--like when I'm browsing a page of text, or reading the Wikipedia. I don't get that problem at all in Safari. Also, bizarrely, it lags something chronic when I'm typing sometimes which, again, Safari doesn't do.

Absolutely. I wouldn't ever want to look at a Flash-heavy site on my clamshell--it would be torturous. Even Flash ads (sadly becoming more and more prevalent) can cause a noticeable drop in responsiveness. I used the example of Flash only to highlight the times that Safari beach-balls me; it wasn't part of my original observation/query. As it stands, Safari is much more responsive than Opera for general tasks, and also doesn't randomly freeze up for several seconds at a time for no discernable reason.
Thankfully, my G4 iMac is more than capable of running Flash--it doesn't even miss a beat on even the heaviest of pages. As for the lower-end G4s, I wouldn't know yet--I haven't got my planned-for Cube.

Install the Safari 3 beta and use the WebKit nightlies. That will give you the best experience on the platform.
