All,

I have 3/4ths of a rar archive and I would like to extract as much information out of it as I can. Is this even possible? Are there any recovery tools for mac that can do this?

Compressed data means that if even a bit is missing, it probably cannot be recovered. (I don't know exactly how rar works, and I know it has error detection built into the spec, but I don't know if such a large chunk can be replicated) Sorry. :-\

Sometimes extracting using the simple version of StuffIt fails to complete, but if I take the .rar or .zip to work and use the full version of StuffIt 10 I can view inside the archive and pull certain bits across to my desktop.

Sometimes StuffIt 10 errors too though (as I guess theres simply not enough info to even organise/open the file)?!

Just a thought.

You may be able to extract bits and pieces but when a rar is damaged most of it becomes unrecoverable. It can only be recovered if you have a backup (obviously) or it's from someone else and they made a par set for it.

If you have a movie file or several images in a .rar file, I would use UnrarX to extract the information from it. Launch UnrarX and go to the preferences and click "Save incomplete extracts" or something like that. I have used it to extract a lot of stuff. However, it you have a plurality of .rar files from one file (e.g. .rar001, .rar002, .rar003), then you will need the first file (.rar001) and subsequent files after that in order to open the archive.
