I have a fast internet connection, can download 40mb in around a minute.
Safari 3 took less than 15 seconds to download.
Browsing is painfully slow.
Loading times:
MacNN forum hompage: between 1 and 2 minutes.
Reply to post on MacNN: gave up after 2 minutes wait.
New York Times home page: 30 seconds. Usually that's a two or three seconds.
Cannot connect to hotmail.com. Cannot connect to synhosting.com, where I want to sign up for webhosting.
It's like driving across LA at 6 PM. You can watch grass grow, people age and die, high risers being built and fall to dust, and still, your car's in the same spot.
I have the firewall on, but that shouldn't cause any trouble.
I also brought Safari's library folder over from my G5 PPC system. Could that be the reason of the trouble?

Yes. It could... why did you bring the library folder, anyway? Do you still have the original "clean" one? Try a reset safari.
Those are my suggestions.

also try a different browser, like camino or firefox, to see if it persists.

Not the whole library folder, just the plist and the safari folder for the bookmarks (and the mail folder).
No exe files.
This is my second attempt to reply, because it has become so slow, that the server timed out.

The second attempt to reply was OK.
Obviously, Safari is working with the cache.

Your problems could easily be a issue with your router. Resetting it (pulling the power out and putting it back in) can be a temporary solution to the problem.
Anyway, consumer routers tend to breakdown quicker than you might expect. Try connecting your Mac directly to the internet connection (avoid the Router) and see how that performs.

I've had my linksys wired router for a long time. It has never let me down.
