On my internet connetcion I always have trouble downloading large files... torrents, updates, etc. When I use my windows, torrents are slow as hell but at least they start. Using transmission/tomato torrent on my Macbook I can't even get the torrents to start. Also, I've been trying to download the 10.4.10 OSX update for the last 2 days, but can't get it done. Sometimes it'll get 100mb into the update, sometimes it won't get 2mbs in and I'll have to start it over.

Like I said, this problem is mostly my bad internet connection. But the other part of it must be my Mac. If I can get the files downloaded in Windows, why not in OSX?

Oh, and... wrong forum. Whoops.

Use Azureus. Make sure your router is either set to forward the necessary port (newest versions of Azureus need only one port, not a range) or that your router can do UPnP (Azureus will automatically work with that to ensure you don't have a NAT problem).

However, it sounds like you have bigger issues than torrents. Describe for us your network setup -- hardware, DSL/Cable, etc.

Hmm, I don't quite know much about my set up/whatever. We have a G router, roadrunner, uh. Yeah. That's pretty much all I know. Also, my NAT is open and my firewall is turned off on my macbook.

This is weird. RIGHT NOW I'm sitting next to mah friend who has three different torrents downloading at 200kbps, 70kbps, and 30kbps and I can't even get one started. I've used Transmission/tomato/azureus and it keeps telling me it cannot find a tracker or something.

And also, the 10.4.10 update is still being lame and getting half way done and stopping.

Edit: Also, I can't get connected to FrostWire to download music either. Guh.

If he has those torrents running on your network, then he's eating up your bandwidth.

If that level of activity is the norm on your network (others using up the bandwidth), then you'll have to do something about them, not your Mac.

What's your max bandwidth -- 3/6/+ Mbps?

The problem isn't people eating my bandwith. I have the same problem STARTING torrents whether or not people are using my bandwith, I was merely showing that for some reason I can't download torrents on my Mac while it's fine in Windows.

And I have really have no idea how to find out my bandwith

dslreports.com has a speed test under the Tools menu.

Have you tried unplugging your cable router for a few minutes?

Yeah, I've unplugged my router for a few minutes before... but if people can get torrents at high speed on my connection with windows why can't I do it too?

Also, the speed test says I get 5.8mb/s down, 42kb/s up, and my latency is 932ms

you could always create a new user account on your macbook, then see if your problems persist. If they don't, then it's your current account that has some kind of corruption/issues.

Also, your latency is high for a cable connection. It should be double-digits normally. I noticed the same thing recently at a friend's house with roadrunner -- high latency.

It wouldn't work on a new account, so I guess my account isn't corrupted.

have you unplugged your cable modem -- not the router? You mentioned just the router previously.

Also, try connecting via ethernet, not wirelessly, to your router. This will rule out an airport problem.
