I just got hold of a Cannon scanner, and the software that is bundled with it is painful. Honestly, I can't even write it.

Gimp and Graphic Converter work with it as a front end, but what do other people use to grab images from their scanners?

Image Capture with Leopard. Works great with nice options for my Brother 7820N.
