Have just switched from Entourage 2004 to mail.app. I find the blue dot that shows unread messages a bit unclear, is there anyway to change the background colour of unread messages or make them bold?

You can make them bold in Preferences->Viewing

You can create a rule in Mail to change either the color of the message subject text or the background of the subject text too.

It is really a shame that Apple forgot to add colour labels via right mouse click in a finder like manner. You can colour the mails via rules, but you have to write/execute another set of rules when you want to change it again. The only way to highlight is with a flag. It is sorta a downer in mail

Not that you'd want to do it manually for each message, but you can select a message and hit command-shift-C to bring up the colour picker.
