applications change system volume, launch websites

Mplayer, Quicktime

It annoys the hell of out me when I am watching videos and the applications change the system volume or launch websites. Is there any way to block this behavior?

I can see some examples of other people complaining about this online, but no input about how to fix it. I searched the forums. Any suggestions?
