Handbrake title confusion; how to join AVI / MPG files?

Handbrake seems to get titles pretty badly wrong pretty often, making it very hard to correlate rip-and-convert with the title+chapter info that DVD player shows.

- Is there a good alternative? I want to rip & compress my dvds
- What is a good program to join multiple mpg or avi files?
- Is Visual Hub good?
