As a fairly new Mac user, I've just recently gotten acquainted with the iLife '06 suite. I absolutely love it, although there are some obvious limitations. I just received my new Macbook Pro, and it came with iLife '08 installed. As I've just gotten comfortable using '06, I'm wondering what the thoughts are on '08; especially regarding iMovie and Garageband. I've read some negative reviews of iMovie, and it seems like they may have oversimplified it. Am I better off reinstalling '06 for now and working with that?

You can d/l iMovie 06 if you have 08, to use instead, directly from Apple. THAT'S how many people disliked it.

Ignoring that, iPhoto is way better. I don't use garageband/iweb. I like 06 better myself, too. 08 lets me do everything, but I prefer the UI of 06. As for photos, definitely stay on 08.

Not quite. Apple did not provide an iMovie '06 download as a result of people hating iMovie '08. It was available the day they announced iLife '08. Furthermore, the iLife '08 installer leaves iMovie '06 untouched if it's installed on a Mac. The installer was designed long before it was even announced/released to the public. Apple knew from the beginning that iMovie '08 would not fulfill all the needs of existing iMovie users. iMovie '06 was always intended to be a supplement to iMovie '08.

Another reason for the iMovie '06 is that if you install iLife '08 on a new install of 10.5 and it happens to be a G4 (like mine) iMovie '08 won't install on your G4. Thankfully Apple provided iMovie '06 as a download so people who can't use iMovie '08 can still have iMovie.

I primarily use iLife for iPhoto. iPhoto '08 is really nice. I like the events feature.
I have not seen any reason across iLife '08 not to upgrade/use it.

I would like to see a bit more advanced iMovie 08, but there is always Final Cut Express!

I don't get it.. if they knew the "new" product was so crippled that people would want to run an earlier version, why didn't they put the old functions in the new version in the first place?

I've always titled my imports into iPhoto broken down by date (per roll); probably due to nothing more than old-school style of sorting data if nothing more.

What happens to these painstakingly sorted rolls if you upgrade to iLife 08? Are they just turned into individual events or glommed into something else?

Guess I could always roll back to my last TM backup of the iPhoto library in the worst case but I'd like to know what people have experienced.

They are published into Events.. by the date of the Roll. The title will be maintained, but events are usually grouped by dates of the photos.

Interesting to note; if you import pictures that were taking a year ago, for instance, they will be in an Event and shown in your list based on their creation date.

I have imported pictures from a while ago only to have them 'disappear' LOL. All I had to do was to scroll up (or back in time) and their they were...

Because it's already huge, and the two approaches are quite different. I think they only expected people with older hardware to download 06.

Also, iPhoto is now intelligent enough to separate freshly imported "films" into "Events" based on date - e.g. if your digital camera contains 15 images shot on one day, 23 from three days later, and another couple after that, those photos will be separated into three events.

iMovie '06: Movies are converted to DV on import. All effects are rendered into DV clips.
iMovie '08: Movies stay in their original format and are merely referenced. All effects are applied in real-time.

So the two programs use a completely different approach to movie editing that is can not be combined into one.

The upgrade went pretty smoothly. It's a different approach, these Events, but something I'll get used to.

I did notice an anomaly though; if you sort by Descending in the Events view, the most recent pictures show up at with most recent at the top. If you sort by Descending in Photos, it only changes the order of the photos within an Event, but the most recent Event/Roll is at the bottom of the screen.
